Live Photos: BMW-BRILLIANCE 5 Series Electric

Ahead of the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show that starts tomorrow, BMW hosted an event in China where the company unveiled the BMW-Brilliance 5 Series Electric.
The electric vehicle was developed in collaboration with BMW’s joint venture partner Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. The prototype is based on the long wheelbase version of the BMW 5 Series Sedan, developed exclusively for the Chinese automobile market and produced at the Shenyang site.
The concept is powered by a hybrid drive set-up that combines a TwinPower engine with an electrical motor. When running purely on electrical power, the 5 Series electric can travel up to 75 kilometers at a constant speed of 60 km/h. Use of the combustion engine provides a minimum additional range of 400 kilometers.
The parallel hybrid set-up consists of a 160 kW combustion engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and an electrical motor with a maximum output of 70 kW. The electrical motor draws its energy from a high-voltage battery housed in the luggage compartment which can be charged via the mains power supply.
Series production of the 5er Electric is set to start in China in 2013.
